================
INSTALLATION
================
To install, use File Manager to run the setup.exe program in the
root directory on the CD-ROM.
Or from Program Manager type:
ALT-F (for File)
ALT-R (for Run)
D:\setup (Assuming your CD-ROM drive is D:)
The setup program will create a program group called "Ghostly
Desires," along with two program items: "Ghostly Desires" and
"Ghostly Desires Readme."
If you do not already have QuickTime 2.01, the setup program will
also copy the QuickTime files (approx. 2 MB) to your hard drive.
=======================
RUNNING THE PROGRAM
=======================
To start "Ghostly Desires," simply double-click the "Ghostly
Desires" program group, then double-click the "Ghostly Desires"
icon.
Once running the program, if you need help at any time, click
on the "?" help button.
For optimal performance, we recommend disabling any screensavers
and setting your color depth to 16-bit (64,000 colors). The
program will also run at 8-bit (256 colors).

THE STORY OF CORTLAND MANOR
===============================
Cortland Manor was a renowned house of ill repute at the turn of
the century. The present structure was reconstructed from the
original architect's blueprint following the Great Plumb Hollow
fire of 1911. Seven women, including the madame, were killed in
the blaze.
Rumors about the haunted whorehouse spread quickly, leaving the
real estate agent unable to sell the property. Soon after,
Cortland Manor fell into disrepair.
============================
HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN
============================
You are visiting the deserted manor, more than eighty years after
the original fire. However, you soon find that you are not alone.
The spirits of the original seven women still inhabit the manor
and they have a big favor to ask of you.
The madame of the brothel, Lexiana O'Brian, is trapped in the
house, along with the spirits of the other six women that
perished with her in the fire. The only way their spirits can be
set free is for them to fulfill one last ghostly desire.
How? That's for you to figure out. As you explore the manor,
you will discover that every room has its mystery. You'll just
have to rely on your own intuition. Many have failed before you,
but perhaps you are the one that can help the ghosts of Cortland
Manor move on.
====================
WINNING THE GAME
====================
As you explore, you'll find the library and inside the library,
you'll find a copy of Playghost Magazine. On the very last page
of the magazine, you will find a checklist with the names of all
six women. Each time you satisfy a woman's ghostly desire, a
checkmark appears next to her name.
When you have satisfied all six ghostly desires, come back to
the library and read the magazine one last time.
=======================
EXPLORING THE HOUSE
=======================
As you explore the house, you'll notice that your cursor changes
as it moves over various areas of the screen. How your cursor
looks tells you what will happen when you click your mouse. Here
are the different cursors you will see, along with a description
of what they do:
LEFT ARROW Turn to the left.
RIGHT ARROW Turn to the right.
FORWARD ARROW Move forward.
BACKWARDS ARROW Step back.
MAGNIFYING GLASS Zoom in on a puzzle.
OPEN HAND Turn the page of a book.
POINTING FINGER Clues and haunted objects.
NOTE: You can see a much nicer version of this list by clicking
on the Help button anytime during the game.
=====================
THE CONTROL PANEL
=====================
At the bottom of your screen, you'll see what looks like a wooden
panel with a bunch of stuff on it. Here's what it's all for:
FAR LEFT
The "Cortland Manor" plaque. Whenever a video clip is playing,
this area turns into a mini control panel for the video, allowing
you to pause, fast forward and adjust the volume.
CENTER
The "Ghostly Desires" plaque. Click on this to save or load a
game in progress (see "Save/Load").
FAR RIGHT
There are three buttons here.
"?" offers you a Help screen summarizing the Control Panel and
the cursor icons.
"!" is the Hide button. The screen will temporarily change to
something more innocent-looking. Click anywhere to continue.
"Q" is the Quit button. Be sure to save your game before
quitting.
====================
HOW TO SAVE/LOAD
====================
To save your game, click on the "Ghostly Desires" plaque at the
bottom of the screen, then choose "Save." You will then be asked
to type in a name for your saved game and choose a directory/
folder for it. When you want to restore a saved game, click on
the same "Ghostly Desires" plaque and choose "Load."
================
HOW TO CHEAT
================
As you explore, you'll find the library and inside the library,
you'll find a book called The Cheater's Handbook. If you ever
find yourself stumped on a puzzle, walk straight to the library
and read the Cheater's Handbook. You will instantly be
transported back to the puzzle and, as far as the computer is
concerned, you have solved it.
============
THE REST
============
The rest you will discover as you play the game. Explore the
house, wander from room to room and don't be afraid to click on
anything that catches your eye.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
=======================
You should have a 386 or better CPU with 8-bit (256 colors),
16-bit (64,000 colors), or 24-bit (millions) graphics, a sound
card, Microsoft Windows 3.1 and DOS 5.0 or 6.x, and a mouse.
Some high-resolution video cards require updated driver software
for operation of QuickTime for Windows. If you experience color
display problems, please contact your video board manufacturer to
see if newer driver software is available.
Make sure you are using the most recent versions of HIMEM.SYS,
EMM386.EXE, and SMARTDRV.EXE. The copies that came with DOS 6.x
are the most recent, and Windows 3.1 files are better than DOS 5.0
files. Your config.sys should have something like the following:
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM NOEMS
Your autoexec.bat should have something like:
C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 1024 1024 (for 8 MB or more memory)
C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 1024 512 (if you have less memory)
=======================
DISK CACHE SOFTWARE
=======================
Some disk cache software will cache the CD-ROM drive. For optimal
playback of video, we suggest that you turn this feature off. If
you are using SMARTDRV, add a /U to the command line in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. For example:
C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 1024 512 /U
Optionally you can keep the cache active. On some machines this
will cause the video to pause, then play great, then pause. The
pause happens while the cache software loads the next series of
frames from the CD-ROM. Some people like this effect.
===================
MEMORY PROBLEMS
===================
QuickTime for Windows and Windows 3.1 is very memory hungry. The
best way to speed up video quality and display is to have at least
8 MB RAM. If you have less, make sure you do not have EMM386
allocating any expanded memory. Also, you should have SMARTDRV
using as little memory as possible (512K cache). The biggest
performance improvement other than upgrading to a 486 is to have
more memory.
You can also use the 386 enhanced Virtual Memory settings to
create a permanent swap file. This seems to improve performance
slightly, but more RAM is better.
==================
VIDEO PROBLEMS
==================
Some high-resolution video cards require updated driver software
for operation of QuickTime for Windows. If you experience color
display problems, please contact your video board manufacturer to
see if newer driver software is available.
If the video display is slow, you may not have enough memory.
You can also try adjusting the colors to 64K colors rather than
truecolor (16.7 million). This results in faster video display
and doesn't affect picture quality.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
==========================
As with any product, you may need to tweak your system to get
optimal performance. The most important considerations are
improper configuration of EMM386 giving too much Expanded memory
(Windows doesn't need any, but DOS apps do), and simply not
enough memory. If you are running Windows with 4 MB RAM, you
will see a REAL performance boost by upgrading.
